I never did post an update regarding the Chalazion that I had in my left eyelid which you can read here.
After using Maxitrol for a week on my eyelid – NOTHING HAPPENED! And so, I did some research and used GENTAMICIN SULFATE. And then, the small lump in my eyelid seemed to shrink. Or at least that was I was trying to tell myself!
4 days passed and I ended up looking like Dracula! People were deliberately avoiding me – because I looked like I had a sore eye! The Gentamicin only made it worse!
NEVER SELF-MEDICATE WHEN IT COMES WITH YOUR EYES! Believe me! (I hope I did not ruin your appetite with this photo.)
So, I was forced to go see another ophthalmologist. I went to St. Luke’s and knocked on the door of Eye Republic. I didn’t have an appointment, but I waited for just 10 minutes before my turn came up.
The good doctor was kind and understanding enough to TELL ME THAT I WAS STUBBORN TO USE Gentamicin
He was also very thorough in explaining how a Chalazion comes about. He said that a Chalazion is very much like a pimple. One of my oil glands in my eyelid was blocked with infection. This often occurs when you use a lot of make-up on your eyelid… BUT I DON’T EVEN USE MAKE-UP! Aaargh…
So, he prescribed TOBRADEX – OINTMENT for my eyelid and EYEDROPS for my Gentamicin brouhahaha…
I had to apply hot compress on my left eye for 10-20 minutes and then apply TOBRADEX on my left eye and eyelid 4 Times a day for 7 days.
TOBRADEX ointment and eye drop application:
Hold the tube in your hand for a few minutes to warm it up so that the ointment comes out easily. Tilt your head back slightly and pull down gently on your lower eyelid. Apply a thin film of the ointment on a cotton bud and rub it into your lower eyelid. After 1-2 minutes place one to two drops of TOBRADEX eyedrop in your left eye. And close your eye for 2-3 minutes.
Voila! It started to shrink.
I came back after a week and he prescribed antibiotics for another week and he advised me to continue with the TOBRADEX application.
After another week – it was gone. I didn’t have to have it surgically removed after all!
Before you do any self-medication, read a bit about it first from a handy PDR Pocket Guide Prescription to drugs and schedule an appointment immediately with your doctor.

im so frustrated with mine.
GuywithChalazion – hope you got my email! My Doctor was Johann Reyes of Eye Republic in St. Luke’s.
Quick question for you, if the Chalazion is on the the upper eyelid and not the lower eyelid… when applying the ointment should I:
- Apply it to the lower left eye lid and then roll my eyes around so that it can reach the inside of the upper eyelid?
- Apply it directly to the upper eyelid?
Hi Sadiq… Use a hot/ warm compress on your closed eye for 5-10 minutes and then the ointment needs to be apply on the edge of the upper eyelid itself… But, still have it checked with your doctor if it’s possible. Thanks!
Thanks for the article. Helpful.
Regarding application of Tobradex, I was told by a dr. to apply it like an eyeliner.
Hi Marie! Yes, you’re absolutely right!
Did that too!

Hi G, i have been having this in my eye since november, i thought it was just gonna go away. i did put tobradex, but drops only. was unaware of an ointment. i didnt even see a doctor. im getting sick of this lump..its annoying. pls reply thanks
Hi Ann! I know how you feel. I’ve been there! You may want to place hot compress on your eye, for 5 to 10 minutes before lining your eyelid with a tobradex ointment. Use it like an eyeliner. And then to add a couple of drops on your eye. Close your eyes for 5 to 10 minutes after doing this. And do this to 2 to 4 times a day if posible to hasten the healing. Hope this helps!
First off it sounds like you had a stye, Chalazions usually last a month and take a long time to go away. It took me a month. Here is my experience

hi thre, im just asking if tobradex is effective in the upperlid? i have one in my right eye, and im so frustrated about it, at first i thought its only a stye and i got bigger..pls help pls.
Hi Rose!
yes, Tobradex is effective for the upperlid too… What my doctor told me to do is:
- Place a warm compress over my affected eyelid for 5 to 10 minutes
- Apply Tobradex ointment on the affected area, right after the warm compress… Using a cotton bud… Apply it like an eyeliner
- Do this 3 to 4x a day
Hope this helps!
I have a lump in my right upper eyelid for a week, my sister told me it is chalazion nd will go away by itself. I thought of hot compress but i never did, so i’ll try it when i get home and i’ll but tobradex later. Hope it will help, it not i need to see a doctor.
Thanks, this is very informative
Hi! I have had my chalazion in the lower eyelid for almost 7 months. I was only aware on the 3rd month that it was a chalazion, after wondering why I have a pea-sized shape under my left eye. I tried using hot compresses, but not consistent though. I gave up in them, since nothing was happening. I also used Tobradex ointment for how many days, but I also stopped. This bump, is all that is left with me.. and it has become visible lately, unlike before. It doesn’t really bother my vision, but people can’t help notice it sometimes. What should I do? Help! Surgery is not an option for me.
Hi Jamie,
Sorry for the late reply. Have you had your eye checked by an opthalmologist? Had to have mine checked just to be sure.
im not sure if chalazion is in my son’s upper ayelid.. it is small, hard, round and tiny inside his eyelid, i consulted it on a dr and nothing happens.. hot compress is applied.. it doesnt affect his vision, hindi dn msakit.. is it a chalazion? pls help me.
Hi D-ann, it may be a stye or a chalazion. How long have you applied the hot compress? It will be best if you bring him to an opthalmologist. I know that Dr. barbara Roque specializes in pedia opthalmologist – http://eyerepublic.com/contact-us/ophthalmologists/by-name/54-by-name/3-barbara-lopez-roque-md-dpbo.html. Perhaps you can give her a call and set up an appointment? It will be much safer, let me know how it goes okay?
tnx for the reply..
mar 15 when i bring him to the ophthalmologist.. he recommend hot compress & genteal eye drops..everyday i apply hot compress since mar. 15. i dont want him to have surgery coz he’s too young..
is tobradex can be use in his eyes?
Hi D-ann, I’m not really sure kung pwede yun sa bata. If there’s no improvement yet, better if you can bring him to a pediatric opthalmologist.
tnx a lot po.. really appreciated..
Maam G: So pag nasa upper eyelid lang ung chalazions, gagawin lang po ung sinabi ng doctor ninyo about the ointment? na ia apply lamang sya na parang eyeliner for 3 to 4 times a day for 1 week after doing the hot compress?
no need to do the eyedrops na kasi hindi naman sya katulad nung case ninyo na napagamit muna ng ibng gamot? tama po ba? cause parang ini imply po ninyo na kinailangan din ung eyedrops (internal application) as compared sa ointment (external application) kasi nga dahil sa mga nauna nyo pong nagamit na medication? tama po ba ang aking analysis? thanks po sa reply mam.
thanks po. napaka informative ng post ninyo.
Hi JC! Yes, tama analysis mo…
